Pedri continues to show that his football is about much more than elegant passing. Against Uruguay, the FC Barcelona midfielder delivered one of those performances that explains why Spain depend on him so heavily.
Now settled at the base of midfield alongside Rodri, Pedri is giving La Roja control, rhythm and constant solutions. For Barcelona fans, it is a familiar sight.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Pedri was central to Spain’s 1-0 win despite playing only 60 minutes. His work with and without the ball made him one of the most influential players on the pitch.
On the ball, he completed 43 of his 50 passes, an 86 percent success rate, while also finding eight of his 10 line-breaking passes. He also made 37 movements to offer himself as a passing option, receiving 17 times.
The most impressive part, though, came without possession. Pedri led Spain with 26 direct pressures and finished as the joint-top ball-winner, recovering possession 21 times.
That is not the old idea of Pedri as just a technical midfielder. This is a player who now dictates, presses, recovers and immediately turns defensive work into control.
He also covered 7.637 metres, made 111 high-intensity runs and completed 30 sprints in just one hour. Those numbers show the physical level behind his calm style.
For Barcelona, this development is hugely important. Hansi Flick wants midfielders who can dominate the ball but also sustain pressure after losing it. Pedri is becoming the perfect example.
There will always be debate about protecting him from overload, especially with Barca needing him fresh next season. However, performances like this also show why every coach trusts him.
Pedri is not just Spain’s most elegant midfielder. He is becoming their engine. And Barcelona know better than anyone how valuable that makes him.
