Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick is giving consideration to fielding Gerard Martín in a new role in the club’s next outing.
This comes amid the ongoing personnel problems at the heart of the Blaugrana’s backline.
At present, Ronald Araújo is considered the only fully fit central defender at the disposal of Barca boss Flick.
Andreas Christensen is fresh off a calf injury, Pau Cubarsí has been dropped to the bench recently owing to discomfort, whilst Eric García suffered a broken nose against Club Brugge in the Champions League in midweek.
With as much in mind, Gerard Martín is therefore being considered as a makeshift central defender to face Celta Vigo.
Left-back Martín was tested in a central role during pre-season, and for the most part went on to impress.
As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, ‘this weekend, that opportunity (to play at centre-back) is even more likely’.
Martín, for his part, is labelled as ‘ready’ to answer his manager’s call.
