Barcelona star sits out training ahead of imminent exit | OneFootball

A forgotten member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona played no part in group training alongside the rest of the club’s squad on Wednesday.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who point towards Oriol Romeu as the player in question.

Midfielder Romeu finds himself in something of a precarious situation at present.

Following a loan spell on the books of Girona in the 2024/25 season, the former Southampton man has since returned to base in Barcelona, with a year remaining on his contract.

The problem for Romeu, though, is that despite playing a prominent role in pre-season training, he does not feature in the plans of the Blaugrana in any way, shape or form.

The likes of Girona and Valencia have been credited with an interest in bringing the 33-year-old in for next season, though only in the case of Romeu becoming available as a free agent.

Such suitors, in turn, will no doubt be interested to learn of the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

This comes amid confirmation of the Spaniard inching closer to an imminent Barca exit.

As per a report from MD:

‘The FC Barcelona management is trying to speed up the termination of the contract of Oriol Romeu, whose link with the Catalan club expires in 2026. Just over a month before he turns 34, his fate is unknown, but this Wednesday he did not train with the group.’
