Sport reports that Barcelona want to secure Joao Cancelo’s long-term future after his standout form, with the dressing room convinced he should stay. The Portugal international has been central to Hansi Flick’s plans since rejoining on loan in January. A match-winning display in the comeback against Atletico Madrid reinforced that view.
Flick is a strong admirer and defended prioritising Cancelo’s return, citing his clinical end product. He sees the 31-year-old’s ability to cover multiple roles as a pillar of his tactical design for 2026-27.
Despite that intent, finances remain a hurdle. Barcelona are hoping Cancelo pursues a termination of his Al-Hilal contract, which would allow a free transfer.
Such a move would mean a major pay cut for the player, and Al-Hilal are unlikely to make it easy while around €8 million from his Manchester City transfer still needs settling. Barcelona are reluctant to commit a sizeable fee for a footballer nearing 32.
Sporting director Deco has pushed the case, highlighting Cancelo’s wish to wear the shirt and his emotional tie to the club.
For now, Cancelo is focused on chasing a domestic and continental double, with Barcelona seven points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga. Any firm decision on his future may wait until after the 2026 World Cup.
