Robert Lewandowski has had a rather slow start to the 2025/26 season with FC Barcelona. The 37-year-old centre-forward has yet to start a single game in La Liga this term and has not yet opened his goalscoring account either.

The reason behind his slow start happens to be a muscle injury he sustained during pre-season, which ruled him out of the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Como.

Lewandowski was also forced to miss the La Liga opener vs Mallorca and has since been eased back into action, with Hansi Flick using him as a substitute against Levante and Rayo Vallecano.

Lewandowski sheds light on injury

Speaking in an interview with The Times, Lewandowski shared the cause of his injury, stating that it was due to ‘too much travelling on buses’ during the pre-season tour of Asia.

The 37-year-old superstar, who has a great interest in biology and recovery, explained during the interview that the muscle injury that kept him out had to do with “the nerves” in his leg.

Lewandowski further explained that it stemmed from “too much travelling and buses” during Barcelona’s pre-season tour of Asia, and an uncomfortable bed in South Korea, which meant he “couldn’t sleep for two hours” and due to which “the muscle was tired”.

Despite being 37 years old, Lewandowski remains supremely fit and athletic, and makes sure to take excellent care of his body – something he has done from a very young age.

“I changed my lifestyle at 21 because I believed I could play four or five years longer than other players,” he said.

“My body was very flexible and it still is, because of the gymnastics and judo I did. I think it has helped me a lot to have a longer career because of what I did as a child.”

Lewandowski’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2026, meaning this could be his final season with the club. However, the striker is confident that he still has at least two or three years of top-level football left in him.
