Barcelona will break transfer record with new Julian Alvarez offer

In the last 48 hours, Barcelona target Julian Alvarez has confirmed his desire to leave Atletico Madrid this summer. The Catalans had been waiting on public encouragement before making their next move, and now that it has come, they are ready to present a second proposal to those at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

A few weeks ago, Barcelona sent their opening offer of €100m, but Atleti chose not to issue a response to what they believe was a derisory bid. Since then, club bosses have been biding their time and scouring the market for alternatives, although they have remained clear that the Argentina international is still their top target.

Now that Alvarez has made his stance clear, Barcelona will table a new bid when the time is right. The details are still being finalised by sporting director Deco and his team, but according to El Chiringuito, the plan is for the proposal to be worth a total of €150m, which would be a new club record if a deal were to be done.

Currently, Barcelona’s record transfer is the €148m they paid Borussia Dortmund for Ousmane Dembele in the summer of 2017 – the same summer they received €222m for Neymar Junior. A deal for Alvarez, if successful, would narrowly exceed this amount, but even then, there is no guarantee that Atleti cave before the end of the summer.

Will Barcelona get their man?

There is no doubt that Barcelona would be better for signing Alvarez, but there should be a limit for their spending. €150m seems about right, but were Atleti to turn this offer down, it would be wise to go elsewhere, as any more would simply not be worth it for them.
