Barcelona are determined to sign a star-studded striker this summer to replace the departing Robert Lewandowski, with their top target being Julian Alvarez. They’ve already had a €100m offer knocked by Atletico Madrid, although this has not deterred their efforts to bring the Argentine number nine to the Spotify Camp Nou.

Alvarez has been on at the top of Barcelona’s shortlist for several months. Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are in agreement that he is the best option to replace Lewandowski, although Atleti are not making it easy for the Catalans to get their man.

Nevertheless, Barcelona are planning to try to the end to convince them. According to Sport, the intention is for a final offer to be sent to Atleti once Alvarez’s involvement at the 2026 World Cup has come to an end.

Offer could be worth as much as €150m

According to the report, Barcelona’s offer will have a fixed fee of €135m, significantly more than their previous proposal. There will also be add-ons, included, and these could take the total package up to €150m – crucially, more than the current record transfer, which saw them pay €148m for Ousmane Dembele in 2017.

Barcelona would assume that this would be enough for Atleti to cave, but that it far from certain. It must be remembered that Real Madrid already offered €150m for Alvarez, but this was rejected out of hand by Los Colchoneros, who made it clear that a deal would only be done if a club triggered the player’s €500m release clause – something that no one, especially Barcelona, will do.
