Ibrahim Diarra endured a season to forget at Barcelona, but the young Malian returns for pre-season determined to make up for lost time and win over Hansi Flick, reports SPORT.

The attacking midfielder, regarded as one of the brightest young talents on the African continent, has started strongly in an effort to convince the German coach of his qualities.

A season lost to injury

Diarra’s misfortune began in the very first week of pre-season training last summer, when an injury derailed what should have been an important campaign in his development.

A subsequent relapse triggered a string of further injuries that prevented him from playing regularly and ultimately forced him to miss almost the entire season. It proved an extremely difficult period for the youngster, both physically and mentally.

Barcelona’s shielding plan

Aware of Diarra’s enormous potential, Barcelona have devised a specific strategy to protect and nurture their asset.

The club have prepared a personalised programme addressing two key areas: muscle strengthening, with exercises designed to enhance his physique and prevent future setbacks, and a strict, tailored nutritional plan aimed at optimising his performance.

A tall, physically powerful attacking midfielder who stands out for his link-up play, explosive change of pace and clinical finishing, Diarra arrived for pre-season with his morale restored and a point to prove.

Flick has called him up once again, and the youngster is eager to demonstrate the consistency that eluded him during his second year at the club.

Diarra was a key figure in Juliano Belletti’s historic Juvenil A side in 2024-25, enjoying a superb end to that campaign in both the UEFA Youth League and other competitions.

Open scenarios

The Malian’s immediate future will be decided in the coming weeks.

While splitting his time between Barça Atletic and the first team may be the ideal path, the competition for roles is fierce, with an abundance of young players of a similar profile.

For that reason, a loan move to guarantee regular minutes cannot be ruled out. Ultimately, though, the decision rests with Flick, who will assess Diarra closely throughout pre-season before determining the best route.
