FC Bayern may have lost 4:5 at Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final, but the reactions afterwards were unusually positive. Instead of frustration, pride and confidence dominated – and sporting director Max Eberl even took the opportunity to take a slight dig at the Parisians
After falling 5-2 behind at one stage, Munich showed great morale and fought their way back into the game with goals from Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz. In the end, it was a narrow defeat that felt more like an interim step than a setback for many of those involved
Eberl summed up this mood after the game: „We were 5:2 down and now it’s 5:4,“ explained the 52-year-old, making it clear what was important to him: the team’s reaction
One comment was particularly striking, and could certainly be interpreted as a dig at the opponents. „I think it’s special for me when we go to Budapest to face PSG, who clapped themselves off after the 5:2 as if they were already through, and then you come back against this crowd,“ said Eberl
A statement that shows how much Bayern have noticed the Parisians‘ reaction in the meantime. The sporting director is certain that this phase in particular has underlined the character of his team
„That’s what defines the character of this team and we’ll need that in the second leg, without question,“ Eberl continued
Despite the defeat, FC Bayern still believe they are fully in the race to reach the final. The starting position is clear: one goal behind – and a second leg in their own arena
„We’re going home now, we’re one goal behind and we know what we have to do,“ explained Eberl confidently. He is also relying on the special atmosphere in Munich: „The Allianz Arena is also a bit of a fortress.“
The message is clear: FC Bayern firmly believes in the comeback and, if Eberl has his way, the story of this semi-final is far from over
„Then hopefully we can celebrate,“ concluded the sporting director – a sentence that shows how great the confidence in their own strength remains.
