Nicolas Jackson remains on course for the African Cup title with Senegal – and FC Bayern for the time being. The attacker was once again one of the eye-catching players as the reigning African champions beat Sudan 3-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament in Morocco
Sudan got off to the better start in the round of 16 in Tangier and took an early lead through a spectacular dream goal from Aamir Abdallah. Senegal were unimpressed, however, and after Jackson himself had only just failed to equalize, he initiated the turnaround shortly afterwards. The Bayern professional set up Pape Gueye’s second goal in exemplary fashion, which turned the game around shortly before the break. Gueye had already equalized beforehand, and Ibrahim Mbaye scored the final goal in the closing stages
It was Jackson’s next goal of the tournament, having already scored twice in the opening win over Botswana, underlining his importance in the Senegalese attack. Now either Mali or Tunisia await the defending champions in the quarter-finals
While everyday life has resumed at Säbener Straße and Bayern returned to team training on Saturday, it remains to be seen when Jackson will be available to the record champions again. The final of the Africa Cup will take place in Rabat on 18 January, and Senegal’s participation in the final would further prolong the attacker’s absence
This means that Jackson, who is currently on loan from Chelsea FC, could also miss the upcoming Bundesliga games against Wolfsburg, Cologne and RB Leipzig. For Vincent Kompany, this means continued improvisation in attack – but with a good feeling in sporting terms, as Jackson is gaining self-confidence and important competitive toughness at the Africa Cup.
