The future of Nico Schlotterbeck continues to be a topic of conversation – and FC Bayern are keeping a close eye on the matter. Now he is getting advice from a former top defender
The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is still tied up until 2027, but is considered a candidate for a possible move to a top European club. Munich are also repeatedly mentioned, although they are currently focusing on a different decision
BVB legend Jürgen Kohler has now spoken out with regard to Schlotterbeck. The 1990 World Cup winner advised the 26-year-old to stay in Dortmund, but made it clear that it’s about more than just club romance. „I said back then at BVB that I would stay despite relegation. I would like Schlotterbeck to do the same. Just pointing to the logo is not enough. I believe that his heart is in it, but he wants to see development,“ Kohler told SPORT1. At the same time, he admitted: „It will be difficult to keep Schlotterbeck.“ His personal advice was nevertheless clear: „If I were him, I would opt for Dortmund.“
From Bayern’s point of view, the situation is clearly linked to another personnel matter. In Munich, the contract extension of Dayot Upamecano is currently a top priority. The French international is still under contract until the end of the season and talks are ongoing. Kohler also made his position clear here and backed Bayern: „Upamecano is in his prime and still has many strong years ahead of him. This constellation fits perfectly. Bayern absolutely must keep Upamecano – that is currently one of the most important personnel matters.“
Sporting director Max Eberl was correspondingly cautious recently. „I don’t know what’s behind the individual doors in the Advent calendar,“ he said on Sky. An extension with Upamecano this year „would be desirable“, but he did not want to guarantee that. At the same time, Eberl emphasised: „Basically, I’m very confident, I’ve said that several times before. We’ve already discussed contract extensions together over weeks and months. It’s our great wish. What’s circulating around us, he would have cancelled, threats, ultimatums – all nonsense. We talk and we talk very well.“

As long as Bayern are working towards an agreement with Upamecano, Schlotterbeck remains an interesting name, but not an acute transfer case. The German international could only become a more concrete topic in Munich if there is movement in the center of defence.
