Following the early World Cup exit and Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, more and more details about the inner workings of the German national team are coming to light. A new report by Der Spiegel focuses in particular on the roles of Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich.

The DFB is working full steam ahead to analyze the World Cup debacle. While national team coach Julian Nagelsmann had recently come under fire primarily for his leadership style, *Der Spiegel* is now also examining the roles of the two Bayern Munich players, Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich.

Neuer did not assume a leadership role within the team

The assessment of Manuel Neuer is particularly surprising. Although the 40-year-old captained the national team on the field and has long been regarded as a leader at FC Bayern, he is said to have played no defining role within the locker room during the World Cup.

According to *Der Spiegel*, the team as a whole lacked clear internal leadership. Instead, various cliques reportedly formed, while numerous players were primarily preoccupied with their own interests.

An insider close to the team describes the situation clearly: “You can tell that some talented players have turned themselves into one-man shows with a thousand external distractions. That takes the focus away from the game itself.”

Another source is quoted as saying: “There were too many ego-driven players.”

Kimmich’s ambition apparently didn’t go over well with everyone

Joshua Kimmich is also a central figure in the report. The Bayern Munich pro was considered one of the most ambitious players on the DFB team during the tournament and wanted to drive the team forward.

However, it is precisely this uncompromising drive that reportedly did not sit well with all of his teammates. According to information from *Der Spiegel*, some national team players felt pressured—and in some cases even annoyed—by the 31-year-old’s constant drive.

The new revelations paint a picture of a team that lacked stability not only on the field. Rather, differing views, a lack of leadership structures, and individual interests are said to have played a major role within the locker room as well.

With Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, the DFB is now embarking on a fresh start in terms of personnel. However, the latest reports are likely to further fuel the discussion about what conclusions must be drawn from the World Cup debacle.
