Bayern’s Gakpo Interest Hints at Liverpool Summer Test

Gakpo’s Rise Under Slot Draws Continental Attention

As Bayern Munich recalibrate after missing out on Florian Wirtz — with the German playmaker determined to join Liverpool — the Bundesliga giants are reportedly shifting focus to another name lighting up the Premier League: Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman, who lifted the Premier League title under new Reds boss Arne Slot, has not agitated for a move, but could be attainable if Bayern are willing to meet Liverpool’s valuation, thought to be close to €60 million.

Gakpo may not be a guaranteed starter at Anfield under Slot, but he’s been far from a peripheral figure. With 18 goals and seven assists across all competitions, the 25-year-old has delivered when called upon, seamlessly blending into a Liverpool system that rewards versatility and selflessness.

Dutch Connection Fuels Bayern’s Interest

Bayern’s admiration for Gakpo is not just rooted in numbers, but in heritage. Former Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel poured praise on his compatriot this week, telling Bild,

“Cody is doing very well for Liverpool and also for our national team. He’s a very fast winger who performs brilliantly on his own. What’s special is that he’s also a very good finisher. He’s a real goal threat. In addition to his footballing qualities, Gakpo is Dutch – and Dutch players have always been good at Bayern.”

Such words carry weight in Munich, where Dutch players have historically thrived. Gakpo, with his strong frame, intelligent movement and increasing confidence, fits the Bayern profile. Should Die Roten convince him of their vision, it would be a compelling test of Liverpool’s stance, especially with changes anticipated at Anfield this summer.

Liverpool’s Forward Line Under Review

The arrival of Wirtz could trigger a reshuffle in Liverpool’s attacking department. With Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez facing uncertain futures, the club may entertain offers for other forwards to balance the books and the squad. Gakpo, however, is under a long-term deal and appears committed. Yet, Bayern’s interest is credible, and Liverpool’s resolve may well be challenged if significant money is offered.

Slot, entering his first full campaign with Liverpool, must juggle ambition with transition. Offloading a key contributor like Gakpo would require assurance of both financial return and tactical evolution. But in modern football, every player has a price, especially when Champions League-winning clubs come calling.

Bayern Prioritise Defence but Eye Late Attacking Move

For now, Bayern are not rushing into a decision. The German champions are well-stocked in attack for this summer’s Club World Cup and recently reinforced their defence with Jonathan Tah, snapped up on a free from Bayer Leverkusen. Talks are ongoing to ensure Tah can join up before 30 June.

Bayern are expected to explore multiple winger targets before committing. Alongside Gakpo, they have been linked with Brighton’s Kaoru Mitoma and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze. The Bavarian club is also monitoring Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (Borussia Dortmund), Rafael Leão (AC Milan), and Nico Williams (Athletic Bilbao).

One way or another, Bayern will strengthen. Whether that means prising Gakpo from Liverpool’s grasp remains to be seen, but interest from Bavaria rarely fades quietly. If anything, it signals a summer of intent in Munich — and questions to be answered on Merseyside.
