Bayern Munich have long doused French clubs’ European dreams. Oswaldo Piazza, Zinedine Zidane and Neymar were all stopped at the threshold of glory.
According to L'Équipe, the tale first flickered the other way. Saint-Étienne reversed 0-2 with a 3-0 in 1970, Salif Keita outstanding, before Bayern’s era under Maier, Beckenbauer and Müller and Germany’s Euro 1972 and 1974 triumphs.
The 1975 European Cup semi-final slipped away, 0-0 then 0-2. A year later in Glasgow, Franz Roth’s free-kick decided a 1-0 final and the posts denied the Verts.
In 1996, Bordeaux of Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu and Christophe Dugarry chased the UEFA Cup despite sitting 16th. They ran dry against Bayern and Jean-Pierre Papin, losing 0-2 then 1-3, and even left Papin at his hotel.
Lyon hurt Bayern twice, Sidney Govou’s double in 2000 for 3-0, and Juninho’s 40-metre free-kick past Oliver Kahn in 2003 for 2-1. In semi-finals they were swept in 2010 and 2020, the latter 0-3 in Lisbon.
Bayern became a home for French talent, from Lizarazu and Willy Sagnol to Franck Ribéry, Corentin Tolisso and Michael Olise. In 2020 in Lisbon, Kingsley Coman hit the only goal as PSG lost 1-0. Tuesday’s tie pits the reigning European champions against this season’s form side, and Bayern have beaten PSG six times in the last seven Champions League meetings.
