Intriguing to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United’s draw against Everton.

The comments from neutrals especially telling…

A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.

The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.

Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.

On this occasion though, the politics almost totally absent.

Instead, what happened on the pitch dominating the debate…

The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Everton fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:

‘A disappointing, tentative performance off the back of last week’s confidence-booster but given the defensive personnel frailties – a clean sheet at home to Newcastle isn’t to be sniffed at. DCL feeding off scraps today. I’m inclined to think we should have had that penalty but can see why it’s not been given. Onwards and upwards.

‘The penalty wasn’t given because DCL caught Burn and not the other way round. Fact.’

‘Never a penalty, you cannot kick back of players leg and claim a penalty.’

‘Don’t be daft. It wasn’t given because it wasn’t a penalty. You can’t kick the defenders leg, fall down and expect a penalty.’

‘As a Newcastle supporter I’m watching Jordan Pickford on sky, good craik, he done well and I’m disappointed we didn’t win, but this was a game we lost last year.

But… James Twarkwoski !! Does this every game, thinks he’s the new hard man !!! But he’s definitely not, I met Everton fans on holiday and they were brilliant people.

Good people and I hope they stay up.’

‘Dan Bird thinks he’s a hard man as well.’

‘Who is Dan Bird?’

‘Flew south for the winter.’

‘Anthony Gordon falls over all the time and proves he’s a soft lad.’

‘Wise lad. Got to be in it to win it. Not like DCL cheats to try and get a penalty.’

‘Newcastle United are steadily improving. Isak and Botman returning will improve NUFC more.’

‘Fair to say not only was this the only goalless PL game this today, but also the most awful?’

‘Yeah that’s Dycheball for you.’

‘As an Everton supporter I think Newcastle would have been hard done if a penalty was given.

My beef is with Gueye who kicked the ball over a wide open net.’

‘At least an honest fan the commentary team on sky sports what a joke clearly all Everton.’

‘Correct, and that awful open goal miss was strangely unnoticed by the “should it have been a penalty?” commentary inquest.’

‘After 63 years of following Everton I cant even listen to Dyche before or after games, he’s as boring as team he sets up!!’

‘We’ll leave Goodison playing the worst football we’ve ever played, I hope we won’t be christening the new stadium also with Dycheball!!’

‘Newcastle dominated but not a lot of threat up front, really missing Isak a natural finisher.’

‘Both mangers will be happy with that result. Neither side deserved to loose.’

‘Newcastle was very poor in the final 3rd, both in the killer pass and the threat at goal. Definately need to be active in January if the top 4 is their aim; they require some depth.’

‘Or, you know, just keeping our strikers fit.’

‘A valuable point for the Blues. But this kind of football is not what Everton is known for, Dyche sticking with tired tactics, it won’t impress the new owners. The striker Thelwell brought in still injured and we won’t see him for weeks……how ridiculous.

Bring on the new era COYB.’

‘This is EXACTLY the type of football EFC are renowned for.

Boring, park the bus route one then whine till the next match.’

‘We must make the most of our next 6 games as xmas looks dire. Newcastle were our hardest opponents in the next seven games. COYBs.’

‘Newcastle complaining about no striker, Everton keep putting DCL on and calling him a striker, check his stats very poor. I think the term Striker in his case is the striker that does not go to do his job. And papertalk say Newcastle want him ? Utter madness.’

‘We had missing strikers but Everton had missing defenders, I guess it all cancels out.

I think if we replay that game 10 times we probably win 7 or 8. With the resources we’re allowed to use we’re not going to steamroller teams every week, so good performances are the least we can ask for. That’s two in a row in the league now in tough games we lost last season.’

‘Same old story. Newcastle had the better time and outplayed Everton. Not a good match and as usual Newcastle didn’t have a striker to finish off some good moves.’

‘But in the next game after the break Everton will still be poor, but Newcastle will have their teeth back.’

‘Newcastle were crying out for a genuine centre forward. Our possession and approach play was quite decent. Everton…oh dear.’

‘2 points lost in their plight for Europe courtesy of a mackem Ole Ole Ole.’

‘Just on our way back from the game and Im still flabbergasted that AG was allowed to take the pen in the circumstances. Loads of other options, really poor decision!’

‘Anyone who has watched the replays and think that was a penalty is delusional. He kicks the defenders leg. Not a bad game for a 0-0.’

‘A really hard watch as an Everton fan, but this is what Dyche serves up sadly on a regular basis. One dimensional tactics.

We seem incapable of passing the ball with any composure .

Newcastle deserved the win.’

‘I feel sorry for the Everton fans having to pay to watch that garbage every week. ‘Game plan’ stop the other team playing football anyway you can then hoof the ball as far as you can to CL. Repeat for 85 mins then 5 mins of pretending to try and win. Awful but will succeed enough to once again survive.’

‘No way on God’s earth that Gordon should have taken that penalty. Everything was against him. Bruno would have buried it.’

‘how do you know that?’
