Benfica have been fined 918 euros by the FPF Disciplinary Council over a social media post criticising the officiating that followed the women’s derby draw with Sporting.
According to Glorioso 1904, the sanction relates to remarks made on X after the 1-1 result at Alvalade on 21 December last year, a post that also prompted a reaction from Ivan Baptista.
In that message, Benfica said they had dropped two points because of refereeing errors. They argued a goal was wrongly ruled out for offside, claiming the footage showed no infringement and that the VAR lines were applied incorrectly.
The club added that, late on, VAR invited the referee to review a potential penalty but the decision remained unchanged, asserting Sporting avoided defeat with help from the officials. They urged the authorities running Portuguese football to take responsibility and act, warning the industry was being discredited.
Benfica further stated the match should have finished 2-0 in their favour, which would have left them eight points clear in the league. A disciplinary case was opened following a referral from the refereeing council. The referee was Ana Afonso, with Cláudia Ribeiro on VAR.
