José Mourinho is the number one choice to replace Bruno Lage as the head coach of Benfica, following last night's surprise Champions League defeat that lead to Lage's dismissal.

The discussions with the Special One began on Tuesday night, quickly following Bruno Lage's departure after the home defeat against Qarabag. The talks are well underway and, although not everything is settled yet, the main terms have been agreed upon.

José Mourinho is open to accepting the challenge of returning to Benfica 25 years later and has already informed his coaching staff of the strong possibility that his next challenge will be at Luz, all that remains is finalise the details.

This means that it is very likely that José Mourinho will be the coach of the Portuguese giants by Saturday. After being dismissed from Fenerbahçe following elimination by Benfica in the Champions League playoffs.

During his stint in Turkey, the 62-year-old had a record of 37 wins, 14 draws, and 11 defeats.
