Manchester City were reduced to 10 when Bernardo Silva handled on his goal line, yet they reached half-time level with Real Madrid. Vinicius converted the resulting penalty before City equalised to make it 1-1 in this Champions League last-16 second leg.

Beaten 3-0 in Madrid in the first leg, City's comeback hopes looked fragile after a lively start with no reward. According to L'Équipe, they failed to turn early pressure into a goal.

On 17 minutes, Vinicius broke on the limit of offside, a check confirmed by VAR, and struck Gianluigi Donnarumma's post. The rebound fell his way and Silva diverted the Brazilian's shot off the line with his elbow.

French referee Clément Turpin awarded a penalty to Real Madrid and dismissed the City captain for denying a goalscoring chance.

In the 22nd minute, Vinicius scored from the spot, sending the Italian goalkeeper the wrong way for 1-0. The goal put Real four goals ahead on aggregate.

City responded before the interval. Erling Haaland levelled from close range in the 41st minute to leave the tie at 1-1 on the night.
