Bernardo Silva could have his choice of Europe’s elite clubs this summer as uncertainty grows over the future of the Manchester City captain, according to a new report.
The Portuguese player has been one of the most important players for Manchester City during their most successful period. Silva has become one of Pep Guardiola’s most trusted players since joining from AS Monaco in 2017. He can play in midfield and also perform wide attacking roles while still maintaining the positional discipline required in City’s system.
Silva is still an important part of Guardiola’s system in this season as well. He has scored three goals and assisted six times in 41 games this term while continuing to perform different responsibilities within City’s possession-based system.
His ability to move between lines, press diligently and control the pace of the game has made him an indispensable component of Guardiola’s midfield rotations.
Bernardo Silva poised to leave Manchester City as free agent this summer
Even though he is a crucial cog of Guardiola’s side, the 31-year-old’s contract situation has led to speculation about his exit. Silva’s current contract expires this summer, with no clear indication of its renewal.
Guardiola himself recently said that he wasn’t sure what would happen with the midfielder’s future. He said he had ‘no idea’ if the player would extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium.
The prospect of a departure has inevitably drawn interest from across Europe. According to Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, several leading clubs are already monitoring Silva’s situation should he decide to leave Manchester City.
“Bernardo Silva, if he does end up leaving Manchester City, which is looking likelier by every passing week, there’ll be a number of top clubs looking to sign him,” O’Rourke said in a recent appearance on the Transfer Insider podcast.
“He’s still a top player, he’s proven that at Man City and for Portugal. The 31-year-old has probably been one of the most influential signings at City since he joined the club in 2017. He’s had such a key role to play for Pep Guardiola’s side.”
O’Rourke added that Silva’s reputation and experience would give him a lot of control in deciding about his next destination. “I think he (Silva) will have his pick of what he wants to do, Silva, if he does end up seeing out his contract at Manchester City,” the journalist said.
City may have to deal with potential exits elsewhere in the squad as well, while Silva’s situation remains unresolved. James Trafford, City’s backup goalkeeper, is said to be weighing his options after struggling for regular minutes this season.
Tottenham plan to step up transfer interest in Manchester City goalkeeper
Gianluigi Donnarumma’s arrival has greatly reduced Trafford’s role and the young goalkeeper has only played 11 times in all competitions this season. According to the same report, Trafford may put Newcastle United ahead of other suitors – such as Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Newcastle are expected to assess their goalkeeping situation amid concerns about the long-term future of Nick Pope. The next few months could bring a period of transition for Manchester City.
If Silva leaves, it will end a nine-year period of stability, tactical competence and trophies. Yet, with Guardiola’s team constantly evolving, the club’s main goal will remain on maintaining competitive balance while preparing for the next phase of their project.
Whether Silva chooses to extend his stay or pursue a new challenge, the closing stages of the season could represent the final chapter of one of the most influential careers of City’s modern era.
