Lionesses international Beth Mead has signed for Women’s Super League champions Manchester City from runners-up Arsenal on a three-year deal.

The 31-year-old forward departs the Gunners after nine years at the club, during which time she lifted the Women’s Super League title, three League Cups, and most famously the Women’s Champions League in 2025.

Mead made 21 appearances in her final season at the Emirates Stadium, scoring two goals and registering five assists as Arsenal finished four points behind her new club to qualify for Europe’s top club competition once more.

It was confirmed that the two-time Euros winner, who while a Sunderland player became the WSL’s youngest player to take home the Golden Boot at just 20 years old, would leave Arsenal at the end of her contract before the end of the season.

Mead said that she believes she will slot seamlessly into Andrée Jeglertz’s system, able to play in the number nine and as an inside forward, and adds additional firepower to his team with Khadija Shaw also having signed a new deal.

She said: “Speaking to the manager, I think it was a place where I think I can really fit into, help and bring a different dynamic to the team, so it was a no-brainer for me.”

“I’m very proud to be here. Obviously, City had an amazing season last year and I am excited to start a new chapter here. I think the way City plays suits me really well, and I feel like it can get something extra out of my game.”

Sporting the number seven shirt for City in the 2026/27 campaign, Mead has transitioned from her starting role as an all-out striker to a wide forward as part of a front three under Arsenal manager Renée Slegers.

Mead has scored 40 goals in 81 international caps and is a seasoned veteran of the women’s game, whose 72 WSL goals is bested only by Nikita Parris, Beth England, and Manchester City’s Shaw and Vivianne Miedema.

Director of Football Therese Sjogran added: “Beth’s achievements in the game speak for themselves, so we’re delighted to bring her to the Club.

“Winning the Double last season was a special chapter in our history, but it’s one we want to build on in the coming seasons. Signing a player of Beth’s quality and calibre can only help that happen.

“She’s shown what it takes to consistently perform on the kind of big stages we want to regularly be competing at, so she’ll be a brilliant addition to our already impressive squad of players.”

Mead’s high-profile move between the two best teams in the WSL is the latest of its kind, with Arsenal’s former left-back and Ireland international Katie McCabe making the switch to Chelsea – who came third in the WSL on 49 points.

City’s new addition will only boost their hopes of ushering in a new dynasty in the top flight of the women’s game, and retain their title after finishing top of the division for the first time in a decade.
