Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has received a significant and unexpected boost, coming from the most unlikely of sources: Real Madrid themselves.
In a rare move in professional football, Real Madrid have officially confirmed via a club statement that they tabled a €150 million offer for Alvarez, only for Atletico Madrid to reject it outright.
It is almost unheard of for a club to publicly confirm a failed bid of this magnitude.

“Real Madrid CF announces that, following today’s Board of Directors meeting, it has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the federative rights of the player Julian Alvarez,” the statement read.
Despite the offer, Atletico Madrid opted not to accept it, citing the player’s release clause.
“After studying and evaluating it, Atletico de Madrid has thanked the club for the offer, made within the framework of the good relations existing between both clubs, and has rejected it, referring to the player’s release clause,” the statement added.

Most media reports had suggested a fee in the region of €130 million would be sufficient to prise Alvarez away from Atletico.
The fact that a €150 million offer was turned down strongly suggests Atletico’s resistance is not purely financial – they simply do not want to sell their star player to a direct Spanish rival.
Alvarez has reportedly made clear that Barcelona is his preferred destination, and Atletico’s willingness to block a move to Real Madrid while potentially remaining open to other options could work in the Catalans’ favour.
Barcelona, however, are not currently in a position to match a €150 million offer. How they bridge that gap remains to be seen.
