The club have released a statement on their website announcing that the 39-year-old’s back with the League Two side.

Montague previously worked for six years with the Magpies, but made the move to Swansea City earlier this year.

His time at the Championship team lasted just seven months, before he left last month following the close of the transfer window.

Notts County also removed their previous director of football, Roberto Gagliardi, last month, with Montague now returning to the role.

Notts County supporters have had their say about Montague’s return, with the director proving a popular figure at Meadow Lane.

Montague was instrumental in the team’s return to the EFL, overseeing a lot of the business from their 2023 promotion success in which they earned an impressive 107 points.

Some fans have claimed that the 39-year-old’s previous work with the club went under-appreciated.

His track record with signings was praised, even with the admission that it’s impossible to get every transfer right.

With his return confirmed, fans are hoping that he can be just as important in helping Notts County gain promotion back to League as he was in their return to League Two.

One supporter has made it clear what Montague must do first upon making his return to the club, with a goalkeeper seen as the number one priority

Notts County missed out on promotion last year with a play-off semi-final defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

The Magpies are in their third year back in the fourth division, and have their sights set on a place in League One in the near future.

Martin Paterson’s side have made a mixed start to the new campaign, with the team sitting 10th in the standings after 11 games, but just one point outside of the top seven.

Next up for Notts County is a trip to face Barnet on 18 October in a 3pm kick-off.

Richard Montague’s welcome return is a positive sign for Notts County

The overall positive reaction to Montague’s return is a good sign for owners Chris and Alex Reedtz.

It didn’t work out with Gagliardi, whose tenure lasted only several months, and being able to bring back the man he’d replaced is the kind of good fortune the club likely weren’t expecting to be able to pull off.

The 39-year-old obviously knows the Magpies well, and it shouldn’t take him too long to get back up to speed again, which is also quite beneficial against the prospect of someone new coming in.
