It looks set to be a busy summer for the Midlands club, as they look to make a noise in the Championship on their return, following a record-breaking season in League One last term.

Plenty of former players have already been linked with a return to B9, such as Che Adams, Nathan Redmond, and of course, Gray. The latter has most recently been with Al Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League.

Now, according to reports from Alan Nixon via his Patreon page on Sunday morning, the Jamaican could be set for a return to the club where his career began, as the Blues are 'closing in' on landing his signature.

It's been almost 12 years since the then-teenager first set foot on the pitch at St Andrew's, where he went on to play for three seasons before making the switch to Premier League side Leicester City in 2016.

Stints at Bayer Leverkusen, Everton, and most recently Al Ettifaq then followed, along with 24 caps for the Jamaican national team. However, Gray's next chapter could be back where his career began over a decade ago.

Following weeks of speculation, Nixon revealed on Sunday morning that Birmingham were closing in on a deal to bring the winger back to his hometown club, as they look to achieve back-to-back promotions.

The 28-year-old looks set to make the move back to England, following two rather uneventful years in Saudi Arabia, where he played under Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, before his departure in January.

A previous report from GIVEMESPORT revealed an £8 million valuation of Gray by Al-Ettifaq amid interest from Birmingham alongside Sunderland and Fiorentina, but for the time being, it remaisn unclear whether Blues will be matching that figure or sealing a reunion at a lower cost.

After years of struggles in the Championship, followed by the agony of relegation to League One, Birmingham are finally taking their first steps on their way back to becoming what they once were, an established Premier League outfit.

Their ambitious owners, exciting head coach and playing squad, and a renewed buzz around the club after a record-breaking season in the third tier really gives the feeling of the sky being the limit for the Midlands club.

Whilst the new squad has certainly excited supporters, bringing back a homegrown player in Gray gives the club a chance to make someone who has a deep-rooted relationship with the club and the city the spearhead of Birmingham's resurgence.

Excitingly, the winger brings a plethora of top flight and international experience, which could prove to be a key asset for the Blues to achieve their targets this season.

All-in-all, the return of Gray is a hugely exciting prospect to kick off Birmingham's summer business.
