Each of Birmingham City, Sheffield United, and Wrexham missed out on a place in the Championship top six last season, with each harbouring ambitions of doing so, but ultimately just falling short.

Birmingham had just achieved a 111-point season in League One in the 2024/25 campaign, with Wrexham promoted behind them in 2nd, whilst Sheffield United just narrowly lost out on the Championship play-off final to Sunderland.

This time around, the Blues finished 10th, Sheffield United 13th, and Wrexham 7th, and ahead of next season, each is hoping to go one better by breaking into the play-offs, and is set to battle one another for the services of a midfielder with ample European pedigree under their belt.

Midfield is an area in which each of the three aforementioned sides is seemingly targeting, as according to FootballInsider's Pete O'Rourke, Rapid Vienna midfielder Romeo Amane is a player attracting interest from each of those clubs this summer.

Amane, 23, first moved to Europe from his native Ivory Coast to Swedish side BK Hacken in November 2021, and would go on to make 98 appearances for the club, scoring seven and assisting ten, before joining Austrian side Rapid Vienna in January 2025.

Predominantly a deeper midfielder, capable of covering the back line and spraying long-range passes to teammates, Amane's 18 months in the Austrian capital, in which he has played regularly in domestic and continental competitions, have earned him admirers from the United Kingdom, with each of Birmingham, Sheffield United, and Wrexham vying for his signature.

At 23, there is a growing consensus that the Ivorian is ready to take the next step in his career, and a move to a promotion-chasing Championship side could be the perfect switch.

Whilst no fee has been quoted, Transfermarkt has his value at around €5 million (£4.3 million), and with a contract running until the summer of 2029, the European outfit will be in no rush to sell him on the cheap.

Having represented his nation heavily at the youth level, Amane is yet to make his senior international debut for the Ivory Coast, and will not be joining his country at the upcoming World Cup.

Amane is under a long-term contract in Vienna and will likely not push for a move elsewhere, but if one of the three aforementioned Championship clubs meets his value, he could well be on the move in the coming weeks and months, with this saga certainly one to keep an eye on.

Amane presents an interesting opportunity for any Championship club able to sign him this summer, including Birmingham, Sheffield United, and Wrexham.

Birmingham have the likes of Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-ho as options in midfield heading into the next campaign, whilst Jhon Solis' loan move from Girona has yet to become permanent, and Marc Leonard is not expected to return to St Andrews following his loan with Hearts, leaving a gap in the middle of the park in Chris Davies side.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United have a plethora of midfield options, but Wilder isn't seemingly keen on many, with each of Sydie Peck, Ollie Arblaster, Alex Matos, and Joe Rothwell at their disposal, whilst Jairo Riedewald and Tom Davies leave the club at the end of their deals, whilst Djibril Soumare and Kalvin Phillips return to their parent clubs from their loans.

Wrexham have Lewis O'Brien, Ollie Rathbone, Ben Sheaf, George Dobson, George Thomason, and Matty James as options, as you'd expect one or two to leave to facilitate a move for Amane.
