FLW rounds-up the details about Birmingham City’s new planned stadium.
Tom Wagner’s ambitious plans for Birmingham City are set to be put in place as the West Midlands club prepares to have a new stadium to call home.
The latest plans for Blues’ bumper new arena in the Sports Quarter have been revealed, with details emerging about how it will look and what will be included.
The American investor is keen to build the brand of the club both on and off the pitch, with the UK Government pledged funding for the transport link between the site and the city centre.
An estimated project of £3 billion, this will prove to be revolutionary for the club, along with revitalising the city by putting Birmingham back on the map.
With this in mind, Football League World brings an overview of what we’ve learned so far about Birmingham’s planned new stadium.
It is hoped that the project, when completed, will leave Birmingham with a stadium capacity of 62,000, far exceeding St. Andrew’s current 29,409.
It means that the new capacity will more than double the existing one in place in the second city, highlighting Blues’ ambition to be a powerhouse in English football.
This means it would be the biggest capacity stadium in the Midlands, toppling bitter rival Aston Villa’s current 42,000 total at Villa Park.
As per the Birmingham Live, Tom Wagner is hopeful all prep work will be completed by 2027, allowing building for the new Sports Quarter to commence later that year or in early 2028.
The construction phase is expected to take three years once the groundwork begin, with Wagner sharing his desire to see it completed within five years of the original announcement, meaning it should be all done and dusted by 2030, while the American investor hopes Blues are back in the top-flight by the 2026-27 term.
Should the stadium be completed after the 2030/31 season has started, Birmingham would move into their new home in the summer of 2031. But the hope is that everything is completed in time for Blues to begin 2030/31 in the Sports Quarter.
Other exciting details have been revealed about the design of Birmingham City’s new stadium, with it expected to include a retractable pitch, like the one top-flight outfit Tottenham Hotspur have, which will allow for non-sporting events to take place easily inside the ground.
It has also been revealed the West Stand is likely to be the main stand to overlook the city centre’s skyline, while the stand will also have restaurants that will be used all year long.
A training complex with separate spaces for the men's, women's and academy sides will also be in place in the Sports Quarter, with a total of 19 pitches expected to be available.
Birmingham Live has also understood that the site will be close to 135 acres when the project is completed, meaning it would instantly become the largest facility of its type to be used by a football club in the United Kingdom, significantly trumping Manchester City’s Etihad Campus, which is 80 acres.
