According to LaNumer12.com.ar, Boca Juniors’ Copa Libertadores opener at Universidad Católica is in doubt over away attendance, with Chilean authorities weighing a ban on visiting fans due to security risks.
Germán Codina, presidential delegate for the Metropolitan Region, said the game could be labelled high risk, a step sought by the local government to stop Boca fans entering Claro Arena.
He added the final decision is still under institutional review with the Ministry of Sport. Authorities prioritise urban safety, protecting residents, infrastructure and attendees.
Las Condes mayor Catalina San Martín voiced concern, citing nearby medical centres and likely traffic chaos. The venue is new and would be hosting its first Libertadores match.
CONMEBOL demands at least 2,000 away tickets, yet it is understood Católica plan to allocate about 450. Breaches could bring fines from $20,000.
Católica have taken a cautious line, saying choices will be coordinated with CONMEBOL and Chile’s security bodies to meet legal protocols.
Reciprocity applies, so if away fans are barred in Chile, Boca would mirror that for the La Bombonera game on 28 May.
There is precedent, with Colo Colo v River in 2024 staged without away supporters, while violence at Independiente v Universidad de Chile in the 2025 Sudamericana also weighs against travel.
The tie is scheduled for Tuesday 7 April at 21:30, with Uruguayan Gustavo Tejera refereeing and Christian Ferreyra on VAR. Telefe and Fox Sports will show it.
