Sunderland have renewed links to Bologna centre-back Jhon Lucumi, with encouragement that a deal could be possible. According to Corriere dello Sport, the Serie A club are working to identify replacements for the Colombia international.

The Black Cats were said to have stepped up their pursuit ahead of their return to the Premier League, with suggestions an official bid went in during last summer's business. Bologna rejected it as they could not source a successor at the time.

"I've always said we'd prefer to keep everyone, even though we know that in reality, certain offers can be tough, especially if the Premier League comes knocking," chairman Claudio Fenucci said to Il Resto del Carlino. "The conditions aren't right for him to be replaced right now, so Jhon will stay with us."

The latest report states there is acceptance that a parting of ways is likely this summer, and that work to find cover is under way. It adds that sporting director Giovanni Sartori is monitoring Fluminense defender Juan Pablo Freytes and Union Saint-Gilloise’s Fedde Leysen.

Sunderland are the only suitors named, with Lucumi said to be frustrated by last summer’s failed move and keen on a Premier League switch he regards as a dream. With Colombia set for the World Cup in North America, the report suggests the spotlight could increase and a departure may follow.
