Spain’s World Cup triumph has resonated beyond the pitch, and Borja Iglesias has become a standout online, his candour and personality making him one of La Roja’s most popular figures.

Per El Periódico Mediterráneo, his Instagram rose from 510,000 on 30 May to 790,000 by 21 July, and his TikTok from 460,000 to 621,000, roughly a 35% jump. He also earned €750,000 in champions’ bonuses.

Known as the Panda, he champions social causes and states his principles openly. He replies to fans, shares music, discusses mental health and diversity, and even DJed at Madrid’s celebrations on Monday 20 July.

On the pitch his involvement in North America was minimal, one minute in the round-of-16 win against Portugal. Even so, he remained a visible presence around Luis de la Fuente’s squad.

That authenticity has sparked goodwill well beyond club lines. Public figures including Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz showed support during the tournament, citing his defence of collective rights and Spain’s diversity.

Back at Balaídos for a second spell, Iglesias is a fan favourite and Celta have benefited too, gaining the first world champion in their history. The club’s Instagram rose from 680,000 at the start of Spain’s camp to 700,000 after the win, with posts starring the Panda leading engagement.
