Bournemouth paid no attention to history on Saturday as they secured a famous first ever win over Manchester City at Dean Court.

Antoine Semenyo put the Cherries ahead after just eight minutes and their lead was doubled in the second half through Evanilson.

Josko Gvardiol pulled one back for the Premier League champions, but they could not find the all-important equaliser. The result sees them drop to second in the table behind Liverpool.

Bournemouth had never beaten Man City in 21 previous meetings going back to 1987, losing 19 and drawing the other two. But Andoni Iraola’s men were full value for their victory, creating six big chances against the visitors.

“It feels amazing,” Semenyo told BBC Match of the Day. “The best team in the world. We made it tough for them and everyone is buzzing with the result.

“A win is a win. It doesn’t matter if it is one goal or three, we deserved it.”

Milos Kerkez was integral to the win, providing the assists for both goals. “His contribution was so good. It was tough for all of us but he made some important blocks to keep us in the game.”

After a slow start to life in England, Evanilson has now registered three goals and an assist in his last five league games.

“We see the potential in training,” said Semenyo. “We know it takes time to settle into a new league but he has done well and the goals are coming now.”

Asked what Bournemouth can achieve this season, the attacker responded: “We have belief. We train hard every day and take it onto the pitch. Everyone is going to write us off but we know what we can do.”

Bournemouth boss Iraola told BBC: “It was a great game. We did everything we could. We needed our very best performance and not the greatest game [from City] and that happened. It is very good to beat City and even better to beat them deservedly.

“It is very difficult. They are a great team. They have amazing subs and you have to suffer, stay compact. We suffered after a good game. We had the chance to finish it and not suffer too much at the end, but now we have to enjoy it.”
