The 21 year old's Bantams form cannot be going unnoticed

Bradford City’s return to League One has been nothing short of impressive after some six seasons away from the third tier of English football.

The Bantams currnetly sit second in the table with 17 points, level with Cardiff City - a Championship outfit last season and a club that have a much bigger budget - but trail behind only on goal difference.

Whilst the Bluebirds do hold a game in hand, Graham Alexander’s side have shown early on that they are capable of competing at the top end of the division.

Much of that success has been driven by academy graduate Bobby Pointon, who is quickly establishing himself as one of the standout young players in the league.

The 21 year old has netted five goals in just seven appearances, amassing his tally in a little over 400 minutes of action.

Pointon’s most impressive moment came on the biggest stage of Bradford’s season so far.

In front of a raucous home crowd at Valley Parade, he struck twice in the first half to secure a memorable 3-1 victory over Huddersfield Town in the West Yorkshire derby this past weekend.

“I am over the moon,” Pointon said after the match.

“It is a Yorkshire derby and I knew everyone would be up for it today. To beat Huddersfield and get the three points, it is a great feeling. I dreamt of the goals, and it is exactly how it went.”

As a lifelong supporter, Pointon has quickly endeared himself to the Bantams faithful. A local lad living his dream, his passion has struck a chord with supporters who see him as one of their own, leading the club's charge in the third tier.

Pointon’s form, however, is no local secret. Having also scored in the 5-2 thriller against AFC Wimbledon, as well as in wins over Luton Town and Wycombe Wanderers, he has found the net against a range of opposition, and he's almost eclipsed his League Two scoring record from last season, where he netted six times in 40 appearances, as well as racking up five assists in that time too.

The youngster's consistency at Valley Parade - scoring in every home league fixture this season - makes him one of the most talked-about young players in League One.

Bradford City will be bracing for January transfer window battle to keep Bobby Pointon

Bradford have already moved to tie Pointon down, handing him a new deal in pre-season that runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of a further year.

It was a significant statement from the club, who see him as central to their long-term plans - and he's already repaying the faith showed in him with his early season form.

But football is rarely that simple. Pointon’s productivity so early into his career and homegrown connection makes him exactly the type of player higher-division clubs will be tracking as the January transfer window approaches.

For a side with promotion ambitions, the prospect of losing him midway through the season is an uncomfortable one.

Pointon’s brace against Huddersfield will not just be remembered fondly by Bantams fans - it will have alerted scouts elsewhere that his performances are not going under the radar.

Whether City can withstand the interest may depend on their promotion push. Should they remain in the automatic places by winter, the club’s resolve to keep hold of their star midfielder will be even stronger.

The contract extension offers some protection, but in modern football, money and opportunity speak loudly.

Bradford supporters can enjoy watching one of their own spearhead a remarkable start to the campaign - but the fear is real.
