Selecao begin campaign with tricky group-stage tie
Brazil take on Morocco this evening with a difficult curtain-raiser to open their World Cup 2026 campaign. Carlo Ancelotti is leading the Selecao this summer, with his mandate simple: win a first World Cup since 2022.
That could be a challenging task, especially when looking at how strong France, Spain, Argentina and Portugal’s squads look, while England could also be potential opponents later on in the tournament if the bracket opens up as expected. But first, they must face the quarter-finalists from Qatar four years ago, Morocco, who are the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, despite losing the final earlier this year.
Mohamed Ouahbi’s men were beaten 1-0 by Senegal back in January, with Pape Gueye netting the winner in the final in Rabat, but with Senegal leaving the pitch in protest at a stoppage-time penalty that the hosts were awarded with the scores goalless, Morocco were handed a 3-0 win instead as the result of a forfeit. They will provide stern opposition to the Brazilians this evening, and you can follow all the latest from the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with our live blog below.
