Ahead of their World Cup clash, we’ve picked our Brazil vs Norway Combined XI.

Goalkeeper: Alisson – Brazil

The latest in a long lineage of great Brazilian goalkeepers, Alisson will hope he can secure the World Cup success that is perhaps required to truly join the Selecao’s shot-stopping icons. At 33, this could be his final opportunity. Alisson was recently voted the 16th greatest player in Liverpool’s history.

Right-back: Jules Ryerson – Norway

Jules Ryerson has dropped to the bench for each of Norway’s last two games, but the Dortmund defender will hope to regain his place this evening. Ryerson was outstanding in the Bundesliga last season, providing 15 assists from right-back.

Centre-back: Marquinhos – Brazil

One of the most decorated footballers in history will hope to add the sport’s biggest prize to his glittering CV this summer. After captaining PSG to back-to-back Champions League crowns, Marquinhos knows what it takes to win on the big stage. Only five players have ever played more games for the Selecao.

Centre-back: Gabriel – Brazil

Gabriel was a colossus in Arsenal’s Premier League title-winning team last season and partners Marquinhos in an all-Brazilian centre-back partnership here. The 28-year-old is a massive presence in both boxes for Brazil.

Left-back: Douglas Santos – Brazil

A late bloomer, the 32-year-old went nine years between his Brazil debut in 2016 and cementing himself as a regular in the side. Santos, who has since won 11 senior caps, has won six Russian Premier League titles with Zenit St Petersburg, who he captains.

Midfield: Bruno Guimaraes – Brazil

Only Michael Olise (5) has provided more assists at this summer’s World Cup than Bruno Guimaraes (4). The Newcastle captain’s all-action performances have been crucial to the makeup of a Brazil midfield that lacks intensity in his absence.

Midfield: Martin Odegaard – Norway

The captain of Norway’s ‘Golden Generation’, who have returned to the World Cup stage for the first time in 28 years. Odegaard has been crucial in Norway’s passage to the last 16, assisting in three straight games.

Midfield: Matheus Cunha – Brazil

Though not a natural number nine, Matheus Cunha has taken to the role with class at this summer’s tournament. The Manchester United midfielder has scored three times in four games, dovetailing superbly with Vinicius Junior.

Forward: Alexander Sorloth – Norway

The 30-year-old is yet to score at this summer’s World Cup, but his work should not go under the radar. A focal point to ease some of the attention on Erling Haaland, Sorloth has worked tirelessly in the frontline.

He remains an underrated goal presence in European football, averaging a La Liga goal every 107 minutes over the last three seasons.

Forward: Vinicius Junior – Brazil

Vinicius Junior had question marks over his impact for Brazil before the tournament, but an electric start has answered those critics. The 25-year-old has scored four goals in four games to enter a Golden Boot race dominated by world football’s biggest names.

Forward: Erling Haaland – Norway

Speaking of which….

Erling Haaland has, as expected, come alive in his first major tournament. Five goals for Norway in North America has underlined his quality, and he will be the man that Norway’s hopes are pinned on. Another blockbuster duel with Gabriel awaits…
