Renato Veiga has been the subject of a few rumours in recent weeks, and today well connected Chelsea insider Ben Jacobs has revealed that the Blues “turned down an approach” from Wolves for the defender in recent days.

“Wolves recently enquired but a January switch to Molineux is now not on the cards,” Jacobs wrote.

With new manager Vitor Pereira in place, the Midlands side are looking to make some quick improvements and clearly thought Veiga would be a solid option – especially given the long running Portuguese connection at Molineux. But it’s not happening.

Chelsea’s Veiga stance not quite clear from insider’s Tweet

What is not quite clear from this Tweet is whether Wolves bid was turned down because it wasn’t good enough, or because Chelsea won’t consider selling Veiga at all this winter. We can see both sides of the argument.

On the one hand, he’s only a B team player and if we can make a quick profit on the €14m or so that we bought him for in the summer, it would make financial sense to do so.

But on a footballing level – we surely want as little disruption to the squad as possible now they’re starting to gel together. Is it really worth disrupting that for a few million which could so easily be squandered anyway?

It would also leave us without a backup left back – at least one which Maresca trusts. We’d surely have to dip into the market, and while we could potentially upgrade on Veiga, we could just as easily end up spending all our profit and more on a move which doesn’t work out.

Unless Wolves or someone else come in with an irresistible offer, we think Veiga stays on until the summer at the very least.
