Bayern Munich are close to reaching an agreement with Nathaniel Brown.
Despite interest from Arsenal and Manchester City, Bayern have won the race for the versatile defender, and it is now a question of when rather than if.
Signing a versatile full-back was a priority for the Bavarian giants, and they are ensuring that the Eintracht Frankfurt defender stays in Germany.
We reported earlier this week that Bayern have achieved a breakthrough in negotiations for the versatile left-back.
The 22-year-old is set to move for Frankfurt for a fee just under 65 million euros, including bonuses, but it is not clear about the structure of the deal.
Christian Falk has told CFBayern Insider that Bayern want to pay about €60m for Brown.
The German champions are most likely to pay a fee of €50m upfront and a further €10m as add-ons for the left-back.
Bayern want to seal the deal at the earliest, because they fear Brown’s price could increase, especially if he enjoys a fantastic World Cup with Germany.
The Bayern giants want to complete his signature before Germany’s first group stage match at the World Cup.
The Bild journalist said: “The breaking news for FC Bayern: earlier this week we reported on the Nathaniel Brown talks. He’s here with us with the German national team. Frankfurt and Bayern Munich have an agreement.
“They want to pay about €60m for the player, which is a lot of money. Now there are talks as to how this money will be paid; will it be €50m at once, then €10m in add-ons? It’s not up for debate as to whether he’ll end up at Bayern – he will sign for Bayern Munich.
“The clear target for the club is that he signs before Germany’s first group stage match at the World Cup, as FC Bayern are worried that the fullback is playing so well he could get a lot more expensive.
“David Raum, who plays in this position (at left-back) with the German national team and is the captain at RB Leipzig, is out of the first-XI because of Brown’s positive performances. That means a lot.”
Brown primarily plays as a left-back, but he is often used as a right-back and also as a left winger. This means, Vincent Kompany can use him in multiple positions, depending on game situation and other player’s availability.
Alphonso Davies remains Bayern’s first-choice left-back, but the Canadian has struggled with fitness in the past 18 months. It will be interesting to see if Bayern would be tempted to offload him should they receive a big offer from Premier League clubs.
Josip Stanisic and Tom Bischof have played in the left-back role last season. While Bischof is expected to return to central midfield and fill the gap left by Leon Goretzka, Stanisic could be used as a back-up option.
Brown has grown into a terrific player for Frankfurt in the past two seasons, and there is plenty of room for him to grow. Bayern are getting a player whose best years are ahead of him, and the big-money investment is highly justified.
