MLS Cup runner-up Vancouver Whitecaps are set for a new chapter after a joint announcement with the City of Vancouver officially sets forth plans for a new stadium.

The Whitecaps have been faithful tenants of iconic city landmark BC Place since relocating in October of 2011, after playing at Empire Stadium during their inaugural MLS season.

However, talks over lease renewal appeared to hit a wall in recent months, with MLS commissioner Don Garber also viewing their current lease at BC Place as "untenable."

Heading into MLS Cup last weekend, there were even whispers that the club could get moved out of Vancouver if they did not find a solution.

In a press conference held at Vancouver City Hall Thursday morning, Whitecaps CEO & Sporting Director Axel Schuster, alongside Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, confirmed that the club will enter negotiations to build a stadium in Hastings Park, Vancouver.

“After an incredible year that saw the Whitecaps reach the MLS Cup Final for the first time in club history, it's clear just how much this team means to our city, and we're incredibly excited to be taking the next step forward," said Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim in an official statement.

"This MOU demonstrates a firm commitment by both the City and the Whitecaps to advance work towards a new stadium here in Vancouver.

"The partnership we are building today has the potential to create jobs, boost our local economy, and transform Hastings Park into an even more vibrant destination for sports, concerts, and community events.”

It now appears that MLS, the club, and the fans are well on their way to a solution.
