Brendan Chardonnet heads to Nantes on Sunday for Brest’s Ligue 1 30th round at 17:15, with his future the focus. According to L'Équipe, the club must decide on a possible extension before mapping any post-playing move.
Brest have a recent precedent. In 2016 defender Grégory Lorenzi, then 32, moved into sporting coordination after seeing Chardonnet return from a loan at Épinal in the third tier and work his way to the captaincy.
He will be 32 when his deal ends. Lorenzi has told him he wants to make him the most significant player in Brest’s history and is ready to support him, adding that talks have been held over a possible extension and what might follow.
Before signing a two-year extension in autumn 2024, Chardonnet had questioned his future after first breaking into the side in 2013. The club’s trust and a superb third place in 2024-2025, earning Champions League qualification and a run to the play-offs, convinced him to stay.
Those close to him now say nothing has been formalised about finishing his career at Brest, and that any approach from the club would prompt reflection, but that has not happened yet. He continues to shine, holding the club record for Ligue 1 appearances with 193.
At Brest’s 75th anniversary events he often featured in the all-time XI alongside Yvon Le Roux, 66, another homegrown centre-back. He says he values recognition, accepts form can fluctuate and expects to feel pride in time. For now the exit door looks shut, and Lorenzi is not minded to open it.
