Manchester United suffered a 4-3 defeat against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium Here are our player ratings from the game.
(A score of 6 is around average)
Altay Bayindir 4 – Not good enough for Brentford’s first two goals. Kept slipping and sliding and never looked convincing with any of his actions. Radiated panic at the back, although he made a good save just before the break.
Tyler Fredricson 4 – Struggled against Kevin Schade, who had the beating of him multiple times in the first half, including one that saw the Brentford man tower over him to head home. The hosts targeted his lack of physicality and they got a lot of joy from it. Decent on the ball but his lack of experience at the highest level showed.
Matthijs de Ligt 5 – Doing well until he got injured. Hopefully it’s not too serious.
Luke Shaw 3 – Lethargic again. Laboured performance and was unfortunate to score an own goal. Just not good enough, which is a real shame for a player of his ability and experience.
Patrick Dorgu 5 – Just OK. Nothing to rave about. Didn’t get forward nearly enough.
Manuel Ugarte 6 – One of United’s better performers, which is not saying much after such a defeat. Some crucial tackles and challenges to stop some of Brentford’s attacks. I suppose it didn’t matter an awful lot at the end of the day.
Kobbie Mainoo 4 – Brilliant over-the-top ball in the build-up to Mason Mount’s goal, but he didn’t offer anything more after that. His influence faded and he struggled with the physicality and pace in the middle of the park.
Harry Amass 3 – Like Fredricson, he was targeted by Brentford, who took full advantage of his lack of height and physicality, especially inside the box. At sixes and sevens when defending set-pieces and failed to neutralise the dangerous Bryan Mbeumo. A tough outing for the youngster.
Mason Mount 7 – Gave United the lead with a good finish. Could have had another but his effort wasn’t strong enough to trouble Mark Flekken.
Alejandro Garnacho 8 – United’s best player. Excellent assist for the opener and then scored a screamer. His side’s most threatening player and made numerous runs in behind Brentford’s defence. He can hold his head high.
Chido Obi 4 – Not very involved in proceedings during his first start for the club. Had a chance in stoppage time but his shot was blocked by Sepp van den Berg.
Harry Maguire 5 – Didn’t make a mistake but was part of a defence that conceded thrice.
Leny Yoro 5 – Same as Maguire. Personally not at fault for any of the goals conceded but not good enough as part of a defensive unit.
Amad 7 – Superb goal. Just what you need from a substitute.
Christian Eriksen 6 – Gave a decent account of himself when he was brought on. Some good forward passes and even had a crack at goal, although he aimed it above the crossbar.
