Brentford booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Aston Villa, following a 1-1 draw in the 90 minutes
Harvey Elliott gave Villa the lead just before half-time, ending their long wait without a competitive goal, with sloppy defending from Brentford contributing to the opener. Mistakes from Vitaly Janelt and goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson allowed the ball to squirm through the keeper’s legs.
Villa came close to doubling their advantage when Jadon Sancho struck the post, but Aaron Hickey kept the Bees in the tie with a smart volley early in the second half to restore parity.
Neither side could find a winner in regular time, so the tie was decided by penalties. Valdimarsson emerged as the shootout hero, making two excellent saves to deny John McGinn and Matty Cash.
Mikkel Damsgaard then calmly slotted home the decisive fourth penalty, sending Brentford through to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace edged past Millwall on penalties following a 1-1 draw, while Grimsby continued their League Cup fairy tale with a 1-0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday. Both sides join the draw for the fourth round.
