Brentford wanted Bryan Mbeumo to reject Manchester United in favour of a move to Newcastle United or Tottenham Hotspur, according to ESPN journalist Rob Dawson.

However, the Cameroon international attacker has opted to join the Red Devils, rejecting a chance to reunite with former manager Thomas Frank at Spurs or move to St James’ Park to join Newcastle.

Mbeumo notched 20 goals and eight assists in 38 Premier League appearances last term after ending 2023-24 with nine goals and seven assists in 25 league games.

He will fancy his chances of producing more at Man United after officially joining them today.

Spurs and Newcastle are playing Champions League football next season, but it was not enough to convince Mbeumo to join them.

Man United ended last season without silverware after losing the final of the Europa League to Spurs, while the Magpies won the Carabao Cup at the expense of Liverpool.

Mbeumo dreamt of playing for the Red Devils as a youngster, and he only wanted to join them once it became clear they were keen.

There was nothing Brentford, Tottenham or Newcastle could do to convince him otherwise.

Spurs have bolstered their attack by signing Ghana international forward Mohammed Kudus from West Ham United, while Newcastle snapped up Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest.

However, both clubs want more and have repeatedly been linked with attackers ahead of the new season.

They will aim to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League next season and also impress in the elite European competition.
