Brighton & Hove Albion have turned down Coventry City’s bid for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, which fell short of their valuation of the 24-year-old.

Ronald Koeman has said Bart Verbruggen could still play in the Netherlands’ World Cup opener, per the Associated Press.

Coventry want to re-sign Rushworth permanently after his 2025-26 loan under Frank Lampard. He started all 46 league games, kept 17 clean sheets and conceded 45, finishing 11 points clear to win promotion.

Brighton have developed him through loans at Walsall, Lincoln, Swansea, Hull and Coventry.

Rushworth has one year left on his deal, with an option for another. He will only stay if the pecking order changes, with Verbruggen first choice and Jason Steele second.

Verbruggen, 23, is the Netherlands’ first-choice goalkeeper at the World Cup. At Brighton he is first pick under Fabian Hurzeler, with Steele, 35, providing cover. Verbruggen has 17 clean sheets in 74 successive Premier League games across the past two seasons.

He sustained a bruised hip after colliding with Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov while claiming a cross in Monday’s 2-1 win over Uzbekistan in a behind-closed-doors friendly in New York. The Netherlands face Japan on Sunday at nine pm UK time.

Something will give in Brighton’s goalkeeping department this summer, with either Rushworth or Verbruggen set for a move. Coventry can offer Rushworth Premier League football.
