Brighton’s only visit to the Stadium of Light came on Saturday 30 October 2004, a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland who would win the Championship that season. According to WeAreBrighton.com, the clubs largely missed each other over three decades, leaving this as Albion’s sole trip.

Mark McGhee set up with a 5-4-1, Darren Currie leading the line and Leon Knight in midfield, with Adam Virgo suspended. Brighton contained the hosts for about an hour before McGhee chased victory, withdrawing Adam El-Abd for Albert Jarrett and switching to 4-4-2.

The game swung in the final 25 minutes. Julio Arca opened the scoring after Liam Lawrence cut inside and Michel Kuipers parried, with Michael Bridges rattling the bar before Arca finished. Dan Harding then fouled Lawrence, who converted the penalty.

An impressive 1,114 away fans made the journey. After the loss, McGhee reflected on limited resources and a youthful squad, and suggested supporters would relish a day out at a venue like Sunderland despite Withdean’s shortcomings.

McGhee later accepted the gamble had risks, noting the change opened the game up and that Harding was told to show Lawrence outside, while calling the spot-kick a clear decision. Kuipers had been excellent that season before a shoulder injury struck later.

Captain Danny Cullip returned swiftly from hernia surgery to start, then departed for Sheffield United six weeks later for £250,000. Harding earned England Under-21 recognition that season and joined Leeds the following summer. Richard Carpenter, Charlie Oatway and Dean Hammond anchored midfield, with Gary Hart replacing Hammond late on.
