Tommy Watson is set to return to the Championship, with Brighton & Hove Albion poised to loan the winger to promotion contenders Millwall for the rest of the season.

According to NY Times, Millwall have fended off rival interest, including from Stoke City, and will take the 19-year-old on a straight loan with no option to buy.

Watson hit a late winner at Wembley in the 2024-25 Championship final against Sheffield United last May to seal Sunderland’s promotion, then joined Brighton for £10 million.

Opportunities under head coach Fabian Hurzeler have been limited by injuries and competition. Watson has made six Premier League outings as a substitute and 10 appearances in all competitions, registering a goal and three assists in 6-0 away wins at Oxford United and Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

He made 24 senior appearances for Sunderland, 13 from the bench, before signing a four-year deal at Brighton, who view him as a long-term project.

Millwall sit fifth after a 1-1 home draw with Sheffield United on Saturday. Brighton also drew 1-1 with Everton, Pascal Gross scoring in the 73rd minute before substitute Beto levelled in the 97th at the Amex.

It was Gross’s first league goal for the club since February 2024 after returning for a second spell from Borussia Dortmund in the January window. Brighton, 13th, have one win and a sixth draw in their last 11 games, and host Crystal Palace on 8 February.
