Bruges congratulate Marseille too soon as Benfica goalkeeper’s late goal knocks them out of top 24

Bruges beat Marseille 3-0 on Wednesday, then congratulated the visitors on what looked like Champions League play-off qualification, according to L'Équipe.

Having sealed their own progress, the Belgian side projected a giant-screen message at full-time offering congratulations to Olympique de Marseille.

Minutes later, everything changed when Benfica goalkeeper Anatoli Troubine scored at the end of added time against Real Madrid in a 4-2 result, an intervention that removed Marseille from the top 24.

At the final whistle in Bruges both teams had appeared on course for the play-offs, but the late goal overturned that picture for Marseille.

The gesture quickly looked premature, and Marseille did not celebrate too quickly.
