Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been recognised with a high-profile honour following his impressive display in Sunday’s win against Crystal Palace.

Fernandes shines

Fernandes ran the show as United came from behind to beat Palace 2-1, catapulting themselves to third place in the Premier League table.

Palace took the lead inside four minutes through Maxence Lacroix, who shook off Leny Yoro to head home from a corner-kick routine.

After a nervy start, United settled into the game and they got their reward moments after the break, when Matheus Cunha drew a penalty from Lacroix. The Palace defender was also sent off for bringing Cunha down inside the danger area. Fernandes stepped up to take the spot-kick and he made no mistake, sending Dean Henderson the wrong way.

Fernandes then orchestrated the equaliser, delivering an exquisite cross onto the head of Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian powered a bullet header into the net to cap the comeback.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, Michael Carrick was full of praise for Fernandes after he inspired United to another triumph.

Diogo Dalot also hailed his teammate’s leadership and even suggested that he is slightly taken for granted.

Troy Deeney certainly didn’t take Fernandes for granted as he named the Portuguese playmaker in his BBC Team of the Week.

Fernandes honoured

On why he selected Fernandes, Deeney wrote, “Bruno, Bruno, Bruno.”

“Every season people write off his importance to Manchester United. Year after year he reminds you why he’s the captain and leader of the team.”

“It was a wonder ball in for the winner and his penalty was as calm as ever.”

Fernandes’ goal and assist against Palace saw him edge past club legend David Beckham in an impressive club ranking. The 31-year-old is now up to seven goals and 13 assists in the 25 Premier League appearances he has made this season.
