Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was used in clips by Pep Guardiola illustrating to his Manchester City players how they should not behave, it has been revealed.

The Blues won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup double in his final year as Manchester City manager, pushing Arsenal all the way in the title race despite his side being at a nascent stage of their remake under sporting director Hugo Viana.

Pep Guardiola originally planned extended Manchester City stay with silverware goal in mind

Enzo Maresca is believed to have agreed a three year deal to succeed Guardiola, with preliminary talks held between the incoming Manchester City manager and Viana to charter the club’s pre-season and transfer window plans.

Guardiola has promised to share his pearls of wisdom with his eventual successor as Maresca returns to the Etihad Stadium, where he has previously served as EDS coach and been part of Guardiola’s coaching staff.

Now, according to The Athletic’s Sam Lee, the day after Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Manchester United in September 2025, one source present describes how Pep Guardiola focussed on Bruno Fernandes.

The Portugal midfielder was notably furious with his team-mates for their role in Phil Foden’s opening goal, berating them as the hosts celebrated at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola is said to have had clips prepared to send a message to his players that while Fernandes is a fine player, displaying such a negative attitude towards team-mates would not be accepted at the club.

The anecdote goes to show the extent to which Guardiola went during his tenure as Manchester City manager to ensure his players were representing the club as best as possible, on and off the pitch.
