Bruno Genesio hit out after Lille’s 2-1 defeat at Celta Vigo on the seventh, penultimate Europa League league‑phase matchday, vowing changes while acknowledging his options are tight.

According to L'Équipe, he condemned the team’s level since the turn of the year, stressed that responsibility begins with him, and signalled adjustments in the coming days.

The loss followed reverses against Rennes 0-2 on 3 January, Lyon 1-2 in the Coupe de France on 11 January, and PSG 0-3 on 16 January.

At Vigo, an Alexsandro error in the 46th second, after he had been preferred at left centre-back to Aïssa Mandi and Chancel Mbemba, put Lille in immediate trouble. Full-backs Thomas Meunier and Romain Perraud struggled, and Meunier was replaced at half-time by Tiago Santos. Despite playing almost an hour with a man advantage, Lille’s flank play misfired, with crosses rarely finding Olivier Giroud.

Marius Broholm and Félix Correia also disappointed, leaving right-back as one of the few positions with a credible alternative.

Lille were without eight players at kick-off, six injured, plus Ayyoub Bouaddi suspended and Ethan Mbappé unqualified. In midfield, Benjamin André was already out and Nabil Bentaleb suffered a shoulder injury in Vigo, his season may be over.

Genesio argued mentality now matters more than systems, noting repeated errors and that 18-year-old Soriba Diaoune, on at 74 minutes, created more in 20 minutes, including an assist for Giroud, than others managed.

With Hamza Igamane sidelined by an anterior cruciate ligament rupture at least for the season, finding a replacement before 2 February, 20:00, looks difficult but could be decisive for Lille’s fortunes.
