Eddie Howe has revealed a fresh update on Magpies talisman ahead of must-win Bournemouth clash
The Magpies have been without their influential skipper since their 2-1 win at Tottenham in the Premier League on February 10 due to a hamstring injury that has ruled him out of the last 12 matches across all competitions.
However, Eddie Howe has now revealed that Guimaraes could play some part at St James’ Park on Saturday after stepping up his comeback in training this week.
“There is a chance he can be fit for the weekend,” the Newcastle boss said on Friday. “We have seen him in training, he is pushing hard to be involved.
“He is desperate to help the team, desperate to be involved. So, there is a possibility. I will make a decision off the back of training today.”
The return of Guimaraes would be a huge lift at a critical time for Newcastle, whose poor form over recent weeks has dealt a major blow to their chances of qualifying for Europe next season.
A much-changed team blew a first-half lead to concede two late goals and lose 2-1 at Crystal Palace last weekend, with yet more points dropped from a winning position leaving them down in 14th place and five points adrift of the top seven with six games left to play this season.
They now face a Bournemouth team who will be a on a high after their shock 2-1 victory over leaders Arsenal, but who have since seen confirmation that manager Andoni Iraola will be leaving the club when his current contract expires in the summer.
“We need that feeling back. It has been too long, we are desperate to win, desperate to play well,” Howe said as speculation over his future on Tyneside continues.
“We have had a mixture of feelings this week. A disappointing result at Crystal Palace, there has not been many smiling faces around the training ground this week, but the feeling is one of steely determination to put it right.
“It is still possible [qualifying for Europe], we need those runs of wins, we haven’t done that this season. We are in a difficult period; we need to come out of that. We can still have a successful end to the season.”
While Guimaraes may return against Bournemouth, fellow Brazilian midfielder Joelinton begins a two-match suspension for accumulating 10 yellow cards that will also rule him out of next weekend’s trip to Arsenal.
