Newcastle captain is a summer transfer target for Mikel Arteta

Standard Sport understands that the Gunners are exploring a move for the Newcastle captain as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his options in midfield.

Arsenal last week held initial talks with Guimaraes’ representatives to understand his situation.

An informal proposal of around £55million was then made, suggesting the club had been given encouragement on the player side to firm up their interest.

Newcastle rejected the approach, but The Chronicle now suggest that damage may already have been done as the player’s head may have been turned by the transfer pursuit.

The report adds that the Gunners believe £65m could be enough to convince Newcastle to part company with their skipper.

Newcastle will now fear a similar scenario to Alexander Isak, who refused to play for the club after being made aware of Liverpool’s interest.

There has been no suggestion that Guimaraes is ready to force through a move, having never previously expressed a desire to leave.

The Brazilian is currently at the World Cup but his representatives have been holding discussions over his future at Newcastle.

Guimaraes has two years left on his current contract and a new deal is not currently close to being agreed.

There has been no direct contact with Newcastle and an official offer has not been submitted as it stands.

It remains to be seen is Arsenal intensifying their interest and making an official bid.

Newcastle also face losing Sandro Tonali to north London this summer.

Tottenham are pushing to complete a club-record deal for the Italian midfielder, having on Tuesday beaten Manchester United to the £85million signing of Matheus Fernandes.
