Controversial dismissals, prolonged VAR checks and pivotal results shaped Bundesliga matchday 21. St Pauli finally won and Dortmund stayed in touch.
Get German Football News highlights early controversy in Bayern’s win over Hoffenheim. Tobias Stieler sent off Kevin Akpoguma for holding Luis Diaz before Harry Kane scored from the spot, Hoffenheim levelled after a Manuel Neuer error, then a second penalty and a Diaz finish put Bayern in control. Diaz later completed his first Bundesliga hat-trick as the leaders restored a six-point cushion.
St Pauli beat Stuttgart 2-1 for a first league win since December, staying 17th but closing to within two points of Wolfsburg. Captain Jackson Irvine played through pain and said the result could be a turning point, a view Alexander Blessin shared.
Dortmund scraped a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg, taking the lead, being pegged back, then finding a late winner. It remained an unconvincing display with few chances, and Nico Schlotterbeck again stressed his belief in setting the tone as captain.
Köln lost 1-2 to RB Leipzig after a lengthy review overturned a late handball shout for an offside earlier in the move. Hamburger SV won 2-0 at FC Heidenheim, who remain six points adrift, with Frank Schmidt lamenting the performance but vowing to fight.
Albert Riera’s Eintracht Frankfurt debut ended 1-1 at Union Berlin after a stoppage-time penalty. Mainz 05 beat FC Augsburg 2-0, and Borussia Mönchengladbach drew 1-1 with Bayer Leverkusen.
