Lazio winger Matteo Cancellieri consolidated his status as the ultimate star of the club’s pre-season by scoring the winner against Burnley at Turf Moor.
Ivan Provedel started in goal for the Biancocelesti, while Adam Marusic played as a makeshift central defender alongside Alessio Romagnoli, with Manuel Lazzari and Nuno Tavares completing the backline.
Maurizio Sarri is currently operating with a depleted backline, so he opted for the trio of Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Nicolo Rovella and Matteo Guendouzi. Finally, Cancellieri and Mattia Zaccagni started on the wings, offering support for Boulaye Dia.
The newly-promoted Premier League side had the bulk of the chances in the first half, even though Cancellieri had an early attempt that went off target. Burnley tested Provedel on a few occasions, including a shot from Josh Laurent in the 26th minute, while Oliver Sonne’s header hit the crossbar in the 40th minute.
After the break, the Clarets were once again denied by the post. A moment later, Dia was brought down in the box, winning a spot-kick for the visitors. Guendouzi grabbed the ball, hoping to convert it himself, but his captain Zaccagni is ahead in the hierarchy. However, the Italian’s attempt was too weak, allowing Max Weiss to make a comfortable save.
Nevertheless, Cancellieri proved to be decisive once more this summer, scoring the goal that separated the two sides in the 75th minute. Dele-Bashiru picked up Pedro in the centre of the pitch with a clever through ball, and the Spaniard did likewise, putting Cancellieri through with pinpoint pass. The latter kept his cool to beat Weiss.
Lazio will play Greek top-flight club Atromitos at the Manlio Scopigno Stadium in Rieti next Saturday in what will be their last pre-season friendly. Afterwards, they will kickstart their Serie A campaign with an away contest to Como on August 24.
